Mathletes Compute at Marshall County Math Day

Students in 4th through 12th grade put their “mathletic” skills to the test during the annual Marshall County Math Field Day competition held on Monday, February 20, 2023.

Approximately 130 students competed in categories ranging from mental math, mental estimation, measurement estimation and short answer. Participants also took a written test.

Marshall County Math Filed Day was established to promote increased student participation in classroom and extracurricular mathematics. One of the primary objectives of the event is to demonstrate mathematics is a challenging, yet exciting, subject to study.

Students who placed 1st through 4th in each division were presented with certificates and medals during a special awards ceremony Tuesday evening at the BOE meeting.

First place winners of the 2023 Marshall County Math Field Day include, alphabetically, Sophia Crumm, Sophie Cunningham, Gunner King, Dalton Lucas, Coltin Myers, Lilly Roman and Kingsley Zheng. Students who earned second place, alphabetically, comprise of Gabe Collins, Owen Geho, Samuel Hanning-Keyser, Cheyenne Harvey, Adaline Morgan, Griffin Sturgill and Kacey Thames. Third place went to, alphabetically, Landon Hicks, Maverick LeMasters, Sarah McBee, Josh Naome, Leo Nguyen, Chloe Pickett and Everett Seevers. Coming in fourth place were, alphabetically, Victoria Kidney, Emily McBee, Nia Miller, Mason Piatt, Gavin Pickett, Landon Potts and Zoe Zervos.

In the high school division, which includes students in 10th-12th grade, Sydney Gray (5th place), Cameron McCord (6th place), Owen Anderson-Magers (7th place), Riley Whitfield (8th place), Danny Tucker (9th place) and Tanen McNeil (10th place) were also acknowledged during the meeting for moving on to the next phase of the competition, as high school students follow a different ranking system than the other age groups.

All students recognized by the board members advance to Regional Math Field Day on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Wheeling Park High School. Regional winners will compete at the West Virginia Math Field Day on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, WV.
