More than 170 Marshall County Special Olympians participated at the county’s basketball competition on Thursday at John Marshall High School.

Student athletes and peer tutors pass basketballs back and forth.

Students from all Marshall County elementary, middle and high schools hit the hardwood, along with a few graduates, to compete in dribbling, shooting and passing competitions. This sporting event gave the Special Olympics athletes the chance to showcase their skills by participating in fun contests.

Peer tutors from Cameron High School and John Marshall High School, totaling around 225, assisted the athletes while shooting hoops. Knights of Pythias members helped serve lunches.

This year’s theme was The Polar Express. So, when the athletes weren’t shooting hoops, they were able to embark on a magical adventure to the North Pole to make crafts and visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus. JMHS senior student Hailey Jones even designed and crafted a wooden replica of The Polar Express steam engine.
